This page summarizes cases raised with Honduras by the Special Rapporteur between May 1, 2011, (when the Special Rapporteur took up his functions) and February 28, 2017 (the date of the last public release of communications). (English) GINEBRA – Más de mes después del asesinato de Berta Cáceres, expertos de las Naciones Unidas reiteraron su llamado al Gobierno de Honduras para que se haga justicia y se esclarezca el asesinato de la defensora de los derechos humanos, y para que se garantice la seguridad y protección de todos los defensores del medio ambiente y de los derechos humanos en el país. Berta Cáceres, fundadora del Consejo Cívico de Organizaciones Populares e Indígenas de Honduras (COPINH), fue asesinada a balazos el 3 de marzo de 2016 pese a que la Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos exigió que Honduras que la protegiera. (Español) GENEVA – More than a month after Berta Cáceres’ murder, United Nations experts - including Maina Kiai - have reiterated their appeal to the Government of Honduras to provide justice and reveal the truth in the killing of the woman human rights defender, and to ensure the security and protection of all people defending the environment and human rights in the country. Berta Cáceres, founder of the Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations Honduras (COPINH), was shot to death on 3 March 2016 in spite of the 2009 decision by the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights requiring Honduras to protect her. Despite repeated acts of intimidation, including gender-specific attacks, arrests and violence that she suffered over the years, she continued to defend the rights of the Lenca community of Rio Blanco, denouncing and opposing the exploitation of indigenous natural resources, especially via the hydroelectric project of ‘Agua Zarca’. “The murder of Berta Cáceres, which is believed to be directly linked to her work and to the fact that she was a woman and indigenous, sadly illustrates an appalling backlash against women human rights defenders and, especially against environmental activists,” the experts stated. (Español) GENEVA – The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders, Michel Forst, today urged the Government of Honduras “to take immediate and concrete actions, or risk turning the country into a lawless killing zone for human rights defenders.” His call was joined by Special Rapporteur Maina Kiai, among others. (English) GINEBRA – El Relator Especial de las Naciones Unidas sobre la situación de los defensores de los derechos humanos, Michel Forst, pidió hoy al Gobierno de Honduras que “tome medidas inmediatas y concretas, para evitar el riesgo de que el país se convierta en una zona de impunidad para los asesinos de defensores de derechos humanos”. La exhortación del Sr. Forst se produce tras otro asesinato de un dirigente del Consejo Cívico de Organizaciones Populares e Indígenas de Honduras (COPINH), la organización fundada y liderada por la destacada dirigente indígena Berta Cáceres, defensora de los derechos del medio ambiente y de la mujer matada hace pocos días. (English) GINEBRA – El Relator Especial de las Naciones Unidas sobre la situación de los defensores de los derechos humanos, Michel Forst, pidió hoy al Gobierno de Honduras que garantice la seguridad y la protección del activista mexicano Gustavo Castro Soto, quien resultó herido durante el asesinato de Berta Cáceres. Las autoridades hondureñas impidieron el regreso a México del Sr. Castro Soto, defensor de derechos del medio ambiente y de la tierra y fundador de la organización Otros Mundos. (Español) GENEVA – The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders, Michel Forst, today called upon the Government of Honduras to ensure the safety and protection of Gustavo Castro Soto, Mexican defender, who was hurt during the assassination of Berta Cáceres. His call was endorsed by Special Rapporteur Maina Kiai, among other UN experts. Honduran authorities prevented Mr. Castro Soto, founder of the organization Otros Mundos and defender of land and environmental rights, from leaving the country for Mexico. He is prevented from leaving Honduras for 30 days due to a ‘migratory alert’, but the grounds for this alert are yet to be confirmed. “I urge the authorities of Honduras to guarantee that the life of Mr. Castro Soto is not put to risk and to allow his return to Mexico as soon as possible”, expressed the Rapporteur, while noting the assistance provided to the defender by the Mexican Embassy in Tegucigalpa. “It is high time that the Government of Honduras addressed the flagrant impunity of the increased number of executions of human rights defenders in the country, especially targeting those who defend environmental and land rights,” Mr. Forst stressed. (English) GINEBRA – La Relatora Especial sobre los derechos de los pueblos indígenas, Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, condenó hoy enérgicamente el asesinato en Honduras de la defensora de los derechos humanos Berta Cáceres, fundadora del Consejo Cívico de Organizaciones Populares e Indígenas de Honduras (COPINH) y dirigente de la comunidad lenca de Río Blanco. El asesinato de la Sra. Cáceres se produjo esta semana a pesar de las medidas cautelares otorgadas por la Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos para su protección debido al aumento de las amenazas de muerte que había recibido durante varios años por su labor de denuncia de violaciones de los derechos humanos de los pueblos indígenas. La Relatora Especial conoció a la Sra. Cáceres durante su primera visita oficial a Honduras en noviembre de 2015, cuando la dirigente indígena facilitó reuniones con la comunidad lenca.
